I watched "Celia The Queen" today. An amazing documentary all about how Celia defined our culture and changed how people sing, dance, celebrate and honor their heritage. I know none of you readers will care to watch it, except for Snow, but it affected me a lot. And it brought back a very old memory from my early childhood that changed me for good. I wouldn't be half as proud about my heritage had it not been for being exposed to these wonderful songs by Celia. I'm very grateful
Cuban Music
When I was 3 years old, I fell in love with Mi Tierra by Gloria Estefan. Soon after, my grandfather sat me down in his bedroom and said "let me teach you about real Cuban music." The first song he put on was by Celia Cruz. Her booming voice soared through the song effortlessly. I had no idea who she was but at that moment, she was Cuban Music. A lot of Cuban-American my age feel this way about her. She's all we're taught until we discover the breadth of our culture on our own.
